Dilano van 't Hoff dead at 18 - motorsport driver in tragic race crash

Young motorsport driver Dilano van 't Hoff has been killed in a crash in Belgium.

The 18-year-old died at the Formula Regional European Championship (FREC) in Belgium, organisers have announced. The incident happened during a morning race at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

The Mirror report footage of the incident shows Van't Hoff's orange MP Motorsport car spin on track in the wet weather conditions after contact with another racer. With vision hampered by the spray, another car then hit into the side of his stricken machine at high speed.

"Everyone associated with the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa is devastated by the news that Formula Regional EU by Alpine driver Dilano van 't Hoff lost his life in an accident during this morning's race," the race organisers said in a statement.

"We express our deepest condolences to his family, friends and MP Motorsport."

The FREC expressed its "sincere condolences to the family, team and friends".

A minute's silence was held before the start of the main 24 Hours of Spa race.

Motorsport's governing body FIA also expressed its sorrow.

F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali said: "We are so sad to learn of the passing of Dilano van't Hoff today at Spa-Francorchamps. Dilano died in pursuit of his dream to reach the pinnacle of motorsport. Along with the entire motorsport community, our thoughts are with his family and loved ones."

The Spa-Francorchamps circuit is where French driver Anthoine Hubert was died after a multi-car crash during a Formula Two race at the Belgium Grand Prix in 2019.

Two years ago, six drivers from the all-female W Series needed medical checks after a heavy crash during a qualifying session on the same track.
