Online "shared-world shooter" Destiny 2, which was developed by famed Halo developer Bungie, will today be receiving a massive new expansion titled The Witch Queen.
Destiny 2's servers will be offline ahead of the launch so those currently playing the game will need to make sure they have finished all their quests and prepare for when the new expansion drops.
The last major expansion to the game was Beyond Light back in November 2020, and fans are excited to see what The Witch Queen holds in store. The much-anticipated Witch Queen expansion, according to Bungie on Twitter, has received over 1 million pre-orders and some players have been able to preload the expansion.
The free to play title is available on Xbox, PlayStation and PC and was originally released in 2017, becoming widely popular, and has featured ongoing content expansions further adding to the game and further developing the story.
Servers in the UK have been down from 3 am yesterday and will remain offline until 5 pm today to enable the new content.
Although players shouldn't expect to log on immediately as it's likely to be incredibly busy, and many users will have issues signing in while maintenance continues and everyone tries to update and get in-game at once, putting a massive strain on servers.
Bungie has warned players of the disruption meaning players shouldn't be surprised if they are unable to play the game on the day of launch.
PS4 owners are having additional difficulties and have been told all the required content will require 72 GB hard drive space, essentially reinstalling the entire game and its additional content, with Bungie stating that:
"Due to an unforeseen issue, PS4 Required Content is not yet available for download. Players using the PS4 version of Destiny 2 can download these files at 9 AM PST tomorrow when Update 4.0.0.1 becomes available."
Once the game is up and running again players will be able to craft unique mods, shader, and stat combinations as well as unleash powerful melee combos, projectile attacks, and protect themselves with a deployable energy shield.
The new expansion will include a new Glaive weapon type, crafting, Void 3.0 and a huge new campaign, a new location Savathûn’s Throne World and much more.
Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Stadia, with The Witch Queen out today.
