Dawoodi Bohras celebrate Eid-e-Milad with joy and reverence in Mumbai

MUMBAI: The Dawoodi Bohra community members across the world celebrated Eid-e Milad or Prophet Muhammad’s birth anniversary on October 7, two days ahead of other Muslims who will celebrate it on October 9. The Bohras follow the Egyptian calendar.

In Mumbai, the 53rd al-Dai al-Mutlaq and head of the Dawoodi Bohra community, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin presided over a celebratory procession (Mawkib) on the eve of Eid-e-Milad also called Milad al-Nabi. Thousands of community members, including members of the Syedna’s family, participated in the Milad procession accompanied by themed floats and community bands. The procession commenced after the evening prayers, beginning from Saify High School at Pydhonie Road and terminating at Raudat Tahera Mausoleum in Bhendi Bazaar.

A spokesperson of the Dawoodi Bohra community in Mumbai said, "On the day of Milad al-Nabi, excerpts from recordings of sermons delivered by the 51st and the 52nd leaders of the Dawoodi Bohra community were broadcast to members across different community centres in Mumbai. The sermons covered the life, legacy and teachings of Prophet Mohammed (SAW ) for leading a life of fulfillment.”

"The occasion of Eid-e Milad al-Nabi is closely linked to the death anniversary of the 52nd leader of the community Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin who passed away four days after Milad al-Nabi in 2014. Thousands of Dawoodi Bohra members across the globe are also expected to arrive in Mumbai over the next couple of days to pay their respects at the graves of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin and Syedna Taher Saifuddin at their Mausoleum in Bhendi Bazaar," he added.
