David Moyes has backed Jarrod Bowen to improve his goalscoring return even further after the West Ham forward’s record-equalling goal against Anderlecht on Thursday.

The England international netted his sixth goal in European competition for the club in a 2-1 win to secure qualification to the Europa Conference League knockout stages.

That strike took him level with legends Johnny Byrne and David Cross before next week’s home game with group rivals Silkeborg.

Bowen will almost certainly break the record this season, which would further underline his improving form.

After a slow start to the season, the 25-year-old has now scored three times in as many games and Moyes believes the former Hull City forward can mirror some of the wide-forwards who have become key goalscorers across Europe in recent years.

“You can see the improvement in him, technically he’s faster and quicker than he’s been and tactically too,” said the Scot at Friday’s pre-match press conference .

“If you think of the best wingers over the years, nearly all of them became centre-forwards and goalscorers and maybe you can see that in Jarrod too.

“If you look at his goalscoring record over the years it has been pretty good, and it’s been that way consistently for us too.”
