Developer Digital Extremes is offering players a chance to get its 2008 third-person shooter Dark Sector for free on Steam for a limited time.

The decision to make the game free comes as the studio is celebrating the upcoming free Warframe: 1999 expansion.

The latter is set to be released in December 2024. Dark Sector's Steam page allows players to download the game for free and not pay the $9.99 price.

Dark Sector is Free for a Limited Time

Dark Sector is a third-person shooter where players are put in control of protagonist Hayden Tenno. He is a covert operative who must invade the fictional Eastern European city of Lasria. It is believed to be hiding a dangerous Cold War secret.

Tenno gets infected with a Technocyte Virus during his mission, which turns him into a killing machine with unique powers and a deadly glaive. He will have to learn to use everything he can in order to save everything, according to IGN.

Many players found the game extremely fun with its intense and humourous combat and giving players the ability to shoot bad guys into the air. One of the major complaints people have had about Dark Sector is that its levels are too similar to one another.

This and the waves of opponents got a little bit too repetitive quickly, particularly near the end of the game. Another thing that people found as a negative for Dark Sector was its relatively weak storyline that had a lot to improve upon.

Celebration of Warframe: 1999

The reason why Dark Sector was made free in celebration of Warframe: 1999 is because the expansion takes players to the year before Y2K. The area is a retro European-style city of Hollvania where you can become Arthur Nightingale.

The offer will last until Nov. 30, 2024, and is welcome news to players who have always wanted to try out Dark Sector but were unsure about spending $9.99 for it.

Many people have compared the game to the Resident Evil and Gears of War franchises, WCCFTech said.

Dark Sector is also somewhat connected to Warframe in that some themes of the former were frequently seen in the latter. One example of this is that Warframe has a faction named Tenno, which is primarily controlled by players.

The game features a single-player campaign but also has a multiplayer mode. It is believed that Dark Sector's multiplayer mode is still active today. At the very least, this is what the game's Steam page seems to imply, according to DSO Gaming.
