Gareth Gates has voiced his heartbreak over fellow Pop Idol competitor Darius Campbell Danesh's death. The 38-year-old singer, who competed against Darius in 2002, paid tribute by referring to him as a "big brother".

As reported by the Mirror, he went on to say Darius "took him under his wing" while they were on the show together - when Gareth had been just 17. Gareth also called him a "gentle soul" that "lit up every room".

He said in a statement: "I can’t quite believe the news of my dear friend Darius passing. I’m heartbroken."Darius took me under his wing during our time in Pop Idol, like a big brother; always looking out for me and for that I thank you my friend.
