Danieli Group unveils plans for STACK leisure destination in Whitley Bay

North East leisure company Danieli Group has unveiled plans to turn an empty former Tyneside ballroom into a new Stack drinking and dining destination.

The Newcastle business – which currently has one operational site and six Stack sites across the North under construction – has submitted plans to house a new Stack development in the former Empress Ballroom in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, which was originally part of the town’s Spanish City. Danieli plans to return the 113-year-old ballroom to its former position at the forefront of the seaside town’s entertainment scene.

The Empress Ballroom was built in 1910 and regularly hosted hundreds of dancers, and later became the town’s Carlton Club bingo hall. Now, however, it has lain empty for some time and has fallen into disrepair. Plans by current owner Mark Holmes to transform it into a leisure and community venue were delayed by Covid and now, although planning permission for a leisure venue is in place, Danieli Group has applied for a variation of the plans to create Stack Whitley Bay.
