Dangerous driving charge after serious Nelson Bay Road crash

A man in his 70s has been charged over a serious crash in Port Stephens earlier this month.

The 78-year-old attended Newcastle Police Station on Thursday where he was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving, not keeping left of a dividing line and two counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct.

It came after emergency crews were called to Nelson Bay Road at Salt Ash on the afternoon of April 5, where a Subaru sedan and Honda SUV were involved in a head-on collision.

Police said a passenger in the Honda, an 80-year-old woman, had to be freed from the wreck and was air-lifted to John Hunter Hospital with serious leg injuries.

Five other people were taken to hospital with minor injuries and three others were not hurt in the smash.

Police charged the 78-year-old after an investigation by specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit.

He has been granted bail and will face Raymond Terrace Local Court on May 23.
