Happy Mondays star Bez has detailed his Dancing on Ice injuries on This Morning as he said his partner Angela Egan “holds him up” on the ice.
Bez, 57, has already treated viewers to a stellar skating debut and appeared on the ITV daytime show to discuss his journey so far with co-hosts Holly Willoughby and Alison Hammond.
Dancing on Ice viewers have seen Bez lowered to the ice on a pair of giant maracas as well as an Indiana Jones-themed routine for movie week, including snakes, a giant boulder and dialogue from the blockbusters.
He said if it was a “true” skating competition he would be “long gone” and thanks those who have supported his efforts on the ice.
He said: “I thought I was going out last week. I was aching everywhere and didn’t think I could do it - but at least I’m prepared now for when I actually do go.”
Alison replied: “I think you deserve to be there, because you are being voted in, you’re doing your best and the only person you’re in competition with is yourself.”
Bez said he’s suffered a number of “bumps and bruises” from gruelling training sessions with his professional partner and reigning champion Angela Egan, 34.
He said: “I also got a chance to make Angel happy, my dancing partner. I’m holding on to her.”
Pointing to a moment on the screen from their last performance, he said: “She actually stopped me falling over there - she’s holding me up.”
On his skating injuries, Bez added: “I’ve got a big massive bruise on my bum at the moment. I’ve got a twisted knee and just generally aches and pains.
“I don’t get fear because I’ve got every pad under the sun and I’m getting really good at falling now on the ice.”
Dancing on Ice viewers are now used to seeing Bez don his crash helmet and he’s the only contestant in the history of the show to need one, because showrunners are worried the 90s star will injure himself after proving accident prone in training.
Alison said: “I look forward to seeing what they’re going to do with the helmet. I get excited to see it.”
Bez replied: “I’m really hoping I can say I don’t need this crash helmet anymore. My fiance says I look like a little boy with it on.”
At 57 he’s the oldest male celebrity competing each week and says that, along with Coronation Street legend Sally Dynevor, 58, he hopes to inspire others in their 50s to try something new.
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
