Dad who died just days before his 40th birthday had suspected bowel disease

An inquest has opened into the death of a 39-year-old father who died in hospital just days before his 40th birthday. Damien Ronald Bedford, of Treseder Way, Cardiff, died at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff on September 12 this year after being referred for an urgent CT scan for suspected inflammatory bowel disease.

Assistant coroner for South Wales Central, Dr Sarah-Jane Richards, formally opened the inquest into Mr Bedford's death on December 8 at Pontypridd Coroners' Court where the brief details of the case were explained. The court heard that Mr Bedford had been referred to UHW for an urgent CT scan for suspected inflammatory bowel disease and that he suffered a collapse on the ward on September 12.

He died the same day in palliative care following an emergency bowel operation. He had been due to celebrate his 40th birthday on September 21. A post-mortem examination carried out by Dr Thomas Hockey on September 28 gave a cause of death as a perforated ischemic bowel. Assistant coroner Dr Richards said further inquiries were being made and the inquest will be resumed at a later date once those inquiries have been completed. Proceedings were adjourned to be concluded at a later date.
