When it comes to choosing a baby name, parents will want something that will suit their child for life. While plumping for a unique moniker might feel like a good idea, there's always a fear that a kid's peers will mock them if it's too unusual.
That's why one dad was slightly concerned about the name he had in mind for his son - because it had some festive links.
He took to Reddit's 'Name Nerds' thread to ask for some 'first impressions' about his son's potential name and proceeded to list the reasons why he and his partner love the moniker.
While names like Holly, Noelle, and Joseph may be popular, the names of Santa's reindeer haven't really ever taken off - hence the father's concerns as he wants to name his first child Dasher.
He wrote: "We are naming our first kiddo (baby boy) and love this name, but would really value some first impressions. It seems 'Dash' is a fairly common name, but we would prefer that as a nickname only."
The dad then listed the reasons why they like Dasher, including 'Dash as a kid, Dasher as a successful adult', the fact their surname is 'common', so Dasher will be an 'interesting first name', it's easy to say and Dasher also has 'some personal connection' to the dad.
He then continued: "Reason we're nervous: Will he be too haunted by reindeer jokes? We don't care about the Incredibles, and that's all anyone seems to comment about the Dash nickname.
"We are not fans of Dashiell (as it doesn't satisfy the same reasons we like Dasher). We'll also match with a 'normal' name for the middle name, in case he decides to blend in."
He then thanked Redditors for their honest opinions - and honest they were.
One wrote: "Immediately made me think of the reindeer - I would not. It doesn’t feel like a name for a human. Dashiell is just way better, or any D name with Asher as the middle name."
Another agreed, commenting: "Agree! I immediately thought 'you know Dasher and Prancer and Donner and Vixen' or however the song goes lol."
People in the comments did say that the comparison to a reindeer was probably inevitable, with someone writing: "I also immediately thought of the reindeer. Unfortunately, that’s also a huge association for kids, so I think lots of teasing will be inevitable.
"I’m not fond of this name personally but saw it recommended somewhere for trendy names - what about just Dash?"
"Asher is definitely a nice alternative!", another suggested.
"I'm Jewish and even I immediately thought of the reindeer lol", one Redditor wrote.
Someone else highlighted it would make a good dog name, commenting: "He will be plagued by reindeer jokes his entire life.
"It could be cute for a reindeer-looking dog, though."
