Cypress Lake Dam In Georgia At Risk Of Imminent Failure

Georgia Police Department of Public Safety

A dam located approximately 50 miles northwest of Savannah, Georgia, is currently facing a critical situation as a result of the intense rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Debby. The National Weather Service in Charleston, South Carolina, has issued a warning stating that the dam is in danger of an 'imminent failure'.

A flash flood warning has been issued for a small portion of Georgia's Bulloch County, extending through Thursday afternoon. The warning highlights the potential for 'life-threatening flash flooding' in the event of a breach at the Cypress Lake Dam. The area directly below the dam is identified as being at the highest risk for severe flooding.

If the dam were to break, immediate flash flooding is expected downstream, impacting areas such as Cypress Lake Mobile Home Park, Dry Ranch Village, and sections of Cypress Lake Road, Cypress Lake Drive, and Cypress Lake Court. The floodwaters would then flow south towards Highway 301. Residents are strongly advised to evacuate promptly if instructed to do so by local authorities.

Debby has already caused significant flooding in various parts of Bulloch County, with rainfall amounts ranging from 8 to 12 inches since Sunday. Emergency crews have been conducting swift water rescues, particularly in mobile home parks within the county, to ensure the safety of residents.

The situation remains critical as floodwaters continue to surge through forested areas, posing a threat to the surrounding communities. Authorities are closely monitoring the dam's condition and are urging residents to stay informed and prepared for any potential developments.
