CUSTOMERS were evacuated from Aldi on Saturday afternoon after a grass fire broke out near the grocery store at Toronto.

Eight fire trucks and 32 firefighters rushed to the scene on Brighton Avenue about 1.40pm, after a Triple Zero call was made to emergency services.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman told the Newcastle Herald the fire was extinguished about 2.20pm.

"We had 15 people evacuated from Aldi," he said.

"At this stage the fire has been extinguished, we did as a precaution send eight fire trucks and 32 firefighters to that call."

It is unclear what the cause of the blaze was, but no injuries were reported.
