MANGALURU: Sporadic cases of Covid-19 in Dakshina Kannada, are gradually increasing the active caseload in the district. The number of active cases in the district, has increased tenfold in two months. The district’s active caseload was just six on May 4, and it increased to 63 on Monday. Similarly, the daily cases of Covid-19 in the district were either zero or less than five, in the first week of May, but has increased to above 15-20 cases per day, recently.
District surveillance officer Dr Jagadeesh said, “We have increased the number of tests in the district recently. Earlier, we were conducting nearly 350 tests per day, and the number has increased to nearly a 1,000 tests a day. All Covid-19 cases found recently are sporadic, and the district has not reported any cluster,” he said.
“A majority of the Covid-19 cases are asymptomatic, and only 12 people are in hospital due to various other reasons. When patients visit hospitals for treatment of various ailments, hospitals and medical colleges find Covid-19 cases. A large number of cases reported in the district are patients from other districts. Covid-19 cases reported recently are very mild, and they get cured within two to three days,” he said.
On the vaccination status in the district, he said that 99% of those who test positive are fully vaccinated with two doses. “We have not seen any Omicron variant of the virus in the district recently,” he said.
Nearly 19 lakh eligible people have already received the second dose of the vaccine, and more than one lakh people have taken the precaution dose in the district, he added. Active cases in Udupi district have also increased gradually, from less than 10 in the first week of May, to 25 at present.
