Lake Macquarie councillor Jason Pauling said the community was fed up with inaction over a replacement for Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre, more than seven years on from its closure.
The Liberal West Ward councillor will submit a notice of motion at Monday night's council meeting for Lake Macquarie City Council to seek detailed advice on the status of the project from the NSW Minister for Sport, Steve Kamper.
"I just want to get some facts on the ground," Cr Pauling said.
"At the moment, the lack of action, lack of communication, and lack of commitment cause me great distress."
The notice of motion also calls for timelines, the proposed scope of the project and information on community engagement planned.
Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre was abruptly closed on March 29, 2019, by the previous Liberal state government.
It followed a report from Origin Energy that warned the Office of Sport that Myuna Bay was in danger if the Eraring Power Station's ash dam wall ruptured during a 5.9-magnitude earthquake.
In June 2024 the Minns NSW government announced plans to build a $40 million replacement sport and recreation centre on the grounds of the Morisset psychiatric hospital.
Then in December 2024 Mr Kamper told the Newcastle Herald that the government would not "muck around" and that "we're looking to get this done. We're not looking to just hang on to this space for five to 10 years."
That statement was made at the announcement that seven hectares of the 520-hectare hospital site had been transferred from NSW Health's ownership to the Office of Sport.
That transfer of the seven hectares between state departments is yet to have occurred.
Last year's state budget papers showed the project had been pushed out to 2030.
Cr Pauling said a potential 11-year absence between the closure of Myuna Bay and its replacement was unacceptable.
"Have they got the cash [to replace it], and how much are they going to scale it down?" he said.
"From my perspective, the best childhood memories were school camps. You go away and stay overnight for a couple of days. It's a growing-up experience and some of my fondest memories."
Mr Kamper previously confirmed the new sport and recreation would not feature overnight accommodation.
"I feel like western Lake Macquarie has been dudded," Cr Pauling said.
Delivering a replacement for Myuna Bay has been a priority project for Independent Member for Lake Macquarie Greg Piper since 2019, and he's previously expressed his frustration with the delay.
Earlier this week Mr Piper met with Lake Macquarie mayor Adam Shultz and new Lake Macquarie City Council CEO David Hughes at the Morisset hospital site.
"His priority is securing the site that's going to be a future benefit for the community, not just be sold off," a spokesperson for Mr Piper said.
"He wants there to be a strong community benefit for the site and is also pushing for appropriate consultation with the community on the future of the whole site."
A spokesperson from the Office of Sport said, "The NSW government remains committed to delivering a new sports facility in the growing Morisset region on the western side of Lake Macquarie."
