Coronation Street fans thrilled by George Shuttleworth actor Tony Maudsley's news

Coronation Street fans have shared their joy after Benidorm star Tony Maudsley made a big career announcement.

The Liverpool born actor has appeared as George Shuttleworth on the cobbles since 2020, though his character hasn't been seen in the soap for a couple of months. His most recent episode aired in January, when George let slip to Sally that he knew about Tim's triple heart bypass before she did.

George is the son of the late Archie Shuttleworth. Following his father's death in 2018, George took on Shuttleworth's Independent Funeral Services.

He later expanded the business with a new funeral parlour in Victoria Street, employing Todd Grimshaw. George has been seeing Todd's mum, Eileen, since 2021.

On Thursday, Tony took to Twitter to make an announcement about his future on Coronation Street. Sharing a selfie he had taken on the cobbles, he said: "That's me (and George) all signed up to Corrie till at least July 2023 and I couldn't be happier! #HappyPlace"

Soap fans were quick to reply to his tweet. Many were thrilled at the news, and rushed to wish him well.

John Hughes said: "Best Corrie signing since the return of Georgia Taylor. Wonderful news, Tony. George is a terrific character, in the mould of classic years, and you've made a brilliant impression. Roy Hudd would be delighted, I'm sure!". Pete Leo said: "Congrats every soap needs a good undertakers especially when they have a serial killer story line"

Kerry Taylor said: "Yay!!! You’re a credit to Corrie, you really are!!", while Dan Brown said: "Congratulations Tony. Look forward to seeing your future storylines". The North Paul said: "Brilliant news! George has been a great addition to the street, long may it continue!"

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV and the ITV Hub
