Albuquerque police authorities are seeking to address what they are describing as "misstated facts and misinformation" regarding events that led to the killing of a man last Friday.

The incident in question took place when police were attempting to clear an encampment at the Tewa Lodge on Central Avenue when one man refused to cooperate. The man, who officers then found out the man had three felony warrants, became "very combative" when authorities began to search him, said Police Chief Harold Medina in a news conference.

"We've asked our officers to de-escalate situations and to avoid the use of force, so they put this person in the car as quickly as they could to try to alleviate any further issues," he explained, as reported by KOAT 7 News. Authorities released over the weekend parts of body cam footage when the man can be heard telling officers he won't go back to jail and that he has a gun.

Medina added that officers were attempting to deescalate but, during a discussion while trying to get the gun from him, shots were fire and the man was killed. The officer acknowledged that police officers at the scene conceded that they hadn't conducted a full search of the person. "They spoke to him for 45 minutes and not at one point in time did this individual say he had a firearm," Medina claimed.
