Coding firm founded above a Cheshire Waitrose to be bought by US giant

A Cheshire coding firm that was founded above a Waitrose in Cheshire is to be bought to a US giant.

Wilmslow-based Mobica is to be acquired by IT services and consultancy Cognizant, which is headquartered in New Jersey, for an undisclosed sum.

Mobica was founded by in 2004 by Nick Stammers and Jon Clayton and now counts the likes of Google, Dyson, BMW, Vodafone, Facebook and Samsung among its clients.

The company has been backed by private equity firm Inflexion since 2015 and employs almost 900 people across Europe and North America.

Mobica has previously won a Queen's Award for International Trade while it turned over £37.9m and made a pre-tax loss of £3.2m in 2021, its most recently available set of accounts.

The acquisition is expected to close in February.

Mobica's CEO Sam Kingston added: "Mobica has built a reputation for world-class IoT embedded software engineering expertise across the entire technology stack, from chip to cloud.

"The alignment we share with Cognizant from a technology, industry and client-focus standpoint represents a strong platform for continued growth in Europe and North America, and an opportunity for our talented team to grow their skills and careers."
