City centre bakery hit with zero-star food hygiene rating

A Liverpool bakery has been hit with the lowest possible hygiene rating following a council food hygiene inspection.

Local authority officers have found major improvement is necessary at Sweet Time Bakery on Myrtle Parade. As a result, the business - situated in ‘new Chinatown’ - has been slapped with a zero out of five rating.

During their visit on February 21, Liverpool Council environmental health officials, who operate the inspections with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said in brief findings made public this month how Sweet Time Bakery left them with concerns around its hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage. A similar finding was made of the cleanliness and condition of facilities and buildings at Myrtle Parade.

This includes having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene. The venue offers a range of baked goods, cakes, cookies and drinks ranging from £1.20 to £10.99 according to its online food delivery provider.

Officials from the local authority also said major improvement is needed around Sweet Times’ system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future. Overall, the bakery, which is situated next to a supermarket and bubble tea shop on Myrtle Parade, has been told to make its improvements urgently.

The area has proved popular since an influx of new businesses opened around L7, with a big student market also flocking to the location. Should the proprietors of the Sweet Time Bakery seek to challenge the ratings handed down by the inspectors, they are able to appeal the decision.

The business will first need to contact Liverpool Council for a breakdown of why the low rating was awarded. If this is still felt to be wrong or unfair, management can appeal to the FSA in writing to challenge the decision.

A right to reply will also be published on the FSA website alongside its rating. The ECHO contacted Sweet Time Bakery for a comment on the inspection and its findings.
