The trailer for the third installment of the 28 Days Later franchise has been released and eagle-eyed fans are convinced they’ve spotted Cillian Murphy — but not in the role they expected.
Ironically, 28 Years Later comes 22 years after the original film hit theatres and nearly two decades after the last installment, and it appears the film’s leading man may finally be making his much-anticipated return to the franchise.
Murphy — who played Jim the bicycle courier in the original post-apocalyptic film — didn’t make a return in the sequel 28 Weeks Later in 2007, and while a reprisal hasn’t been officially confirmed, it certainly looks like he’s in the new trailer.
The first official trailer dropped this week, and if you look carefully, a split-second scene may have given away Jim’s fate.
One shot in the trailer depicts a zombie that looks strikingly like Murphy — whose character survived the first film but was noticeably absent from the sequel — walking in a field.
Could this mean that Jim has succumbed to the virus and is now a zombie living his best life frolicking in a field? Is he playing double roles? Is this just a surprise Easter egg for the most diehard fans? Or does Cillian Murphy just look weirdly like a zombie?
Fans of the cult-fave zombie movie have flocked to social media to share their theories.
“would be awesome if all the ‘OSCAR WINNER CILLIAN MURPHY RETURN TO 28 DAYS LATER FRANCHISES AFTER 20 YEARS’ headlines led to him just being a really emaciated zombie for like one sad scene where no one recognizes him and he doesn’t speak,” one fan wrote on X.
“Ten bucks that the zombie IS Cillian Murphy and The Bone Temple is half a prequel that takes place at the same time,” another added.
“Cillian Murphy gets twinkquified,” a third wrote.
And, of course, Cillian Murphy *stunned* in the trailer.
Those 28 years really did a number on him.
Murphy is listed as an executive producer of the film, but has been noticeably absent from the promotional posters. He has, however, voiced his desire to reprise his role as Jim in the film, so perhaps the producers are just trying to keep his role under wraps until the film hits theatres.
28 Years Later hits theatres on June 20, 2025.
