Christmas comes early as nursery kids hand over cheques to charity

Big-hearted nursery kids have shown that Christmas is the best time for giving.

Earlier this year, Early Steps Nursery took their fundraising to a new level by arranging a full day dedicated to raising funds for local charities.

The day kicked off with a classic car show where more than 110 cars attended.

This was followed by a sponsored fire walk.

The event saw groups of volunteers from the Team Jak Foundation, Jak’s Den, Breast Friends and Family and Lanark Cancer Research, along with a group of parents, bare their feet and walk over hot coals to raise funds to help Mila, one of the nursery children who has some additional support needs.

The day was a remarkable success and has now paved the way for this to be an annual event.

Dates and details of next year’s event will be given out shortly. Manager Carol Armstrong said: “This week the we had the opportunity for the nursery children to hand over the funds they had raised.

“We split the nursery fundraising between Jak’s Den and Breast Friends and Family on behalf of St John’s Oncology unit.

“The children were delighted to share some festive cheer by handing over a cheque for £1800 to each charity.”

Hazel McLinden, director of operations at Team Jak and Hazel Orr the founder and trustee from Breast Friends and Family, along with Becky Gallagher a breast care nurse from St Johns Oncology unit, came along to the nursery to meet the children and accept the cheques.

She said: “The money raised will help make a difference to the families supported through Team Jak and will help make the journey of people dealing with cancer at St Johns that little bit easier.

“A big thank you to everyone for their support.”
