Longtime film and television actor Christina Applegate received a standing ovation during Monday night’s Emmy ceremony after seemingly retiring from on-camera work because of her health.
Applegate shared her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2021 and hinted at retiring from working in front of the camera last year after a multi-decade career that featured standout performances on Married… with Children, Anchorman, Dead to Me and Samantha Who?
As she was escorted to the stage to present an award, the entire crowd at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles stood and cheered for her, which moved Applegate deeply.
She followed that moment with a very funny, moving introduction before presenting the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy to The Bear‘s Ayo Edebiri.

Applegate has been one of the funnier actors of her generation, and this was a very fitting tribute as she transitions into a new stage of her film and television career.
