Children showered with glass after school bus hits wall

Pupils travelling home on a school bus were left "showered in glass" after it collided with a wall while trying to navigate past another vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. Windows on the bus shattered as the driver attempted to get past the oncoming vehicle.

The incident took place along Derwen Fawr Road in Sketty, Swansea, on Monday, February 13, with the bus carrying pupils from Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr in Gowerton.

A family member of two of the pupils on the bus spoke about their experience of being on there at the time of the incident, describing how some children ended up having glass stuck in their hair. Get Swansea stories straight to your inbox with our newsletter.

"They said they were going through the narrow lanes in Derwen Fawr and another vehicle came along and the two drivers couldn't get past one another. The bus tried to edge through the gap and it hit the wall and all the glass showered inside," he said.

"It was in the kids' hair and everything. Luckily, nobody was actually cut. With kids on board and glass flying everywhere, it could have been something severe. They were very, very lucky not to have got cut. The glass was all over the seats and everything. I was quite shocked, it's not something you expect to hear about. It's a bad area to drive the best of times. The school said they were going to pursue it."

A spokesman for Adventure Travel said: “We are investigating the circumstances regarding an incident with one of our vehicles at Derwen Fawr, Sketty, on Monday, February 13, and are co-operating with the local education authority’s own investigation. We cannot say anything further about the incident while those investigations are ongoing. But we must stress that passenger safety and well-being is our absolute priority.”
