The Cheltenham Festival continues today for the third day of horse racing action at Prestbury Park with all eyes on the Ryanair Chase.
Willie Mullins’ fan-favourite Irish Gold Cup winner, Fact To File, withdrew from the champion race of the day so couldn’t repeat his victory from 2025 where he won by nine lengths as Heart Wood claimed victory for Henry de Bromhead and Jonbon finished second once again as his wait for a first Festival win goes on.
Day three began in splendid fashion as Tom Bellamy rode home White Noise at 40/1 to win the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle and achieve something he’d “waited his whole life for”. His win was followed by Ben Jones taking Meetmebythesea to victory in the Jack Richards’ Handicap Chase in the colours of JP McManus.
Mullins’ Lossiemouth headlined the opening day and cemented her place in the Festival’s history with victory in the Champion Hurdle while the future looks bright for the sport with impressive showings from the next generation of trainers and horses on Wednesday.

Heart Wood seizes Cheltenham Festival redemption but Fact To File withdrawal raises vital question
Thursday 12 March 2026 16:56 , Mike JonesThere was a collective groan from horseracing fans at the Cheltenham Festival when it became clear that JP McManus and Willie Mullins did not intend to run fan-favourite Fact To File in Thursday’s Ryanair Chase.
The pair had already raised the eyebrows of spectators last week when omitting him from Friday’s Gold Cup with the reaction to that news one of disbelief. But that wasn’t how McManus saw it.

Willie Mullins makes Cheltenham Festival threat after Fact to File withdraws from Ryanair Chase
06:00 , Mike JonesTrainer Willie Mullins has threatened to stop bringing his best horses to Cheltenham Festival over the condition of the racecourse following the late withdrawal of Fact to File in the Ryanair Chase.

Cheltenham Festival provides glimpse into horseracing’s future while returning to its past
04:00 , Mike JonesIn its quest to draw back audiences and boost attendance numbers, there has been a real push from the Cheltenham Festival to look to the past and repeat previous successes.
Whether that is reducing the price of a pint of Guinness by 30p, bringing back the Ladies Day moniker for the first time in seven years or making fan-favourite retired jockey Rachael Blackmore the face of the day, these initiatives are having a positive impact. But they pale in comparison to the draw of watching the best horses race at this most splendid of racecourses.

Undefeated and unassailable, why Lossiemouth is undoubtedly a Cheltenham legend
03:00 , Mike JonesThe Cheltenham Festival roared back into the public consciousness with a sensational opening day that saw Lossiemouth, and jockey Paul Townend, claim the Champion Hurdle spoils in the latest act of glory for this legendary horse.
The Willie Mullins-trained mare, famed for her grey coat, headlined the first champion race of the four-day festival and was a class above the rest of the field. And that is saying something, as the race featured previous Cheltenham winners Golden Ace and Poniros, as well as Dan Skelton’s favoured The New Lion, who hoped to threaten but failed to make his move early enough.

Second horse dies at Cheltenham Festival in two days after fatal injury
02:00 , Mike JonesA second horse has died in as many days at the Cheltenham Festival after HMS Seahorse fell in Wednesday’s BetMGM Cup Handicap Hurdle and suffered fatal injuries.
In a statement, Cheltenham Racecourse said the Paul Nolan-trained eight-year-old was “immediately attended to by a team of expert vets, but sadly sustained an injury at the final hurdle and could not be saved. Our heartfelt condolences are with connections.”

Home By The Lee jockey JJ Slevin speaking to ITV:
01:00 , Mike Jones"It's his fifth run in this race. We were coming here hoping we'd do well. He was on fire in the ring before.
"It's unreal. I've been with him every step of the way. I've had good days and bad days. He's been a great horse. He's tough as nails.
"He ran all the way down the hill. He started knocking but we snatched it back and down went his head. It was great."
Mullins on Fact To File
00:00 , Mike Jones"Well, the ground is too good. These are big national hunt horses. We pay a lot of money for them, and we mind them.
"We don't think there is any soft in the ground – the ground is good. Bambino Fever got beaten in the first [race], and I was disappointed with that.
"When I saw the ground this morning I thought this won't be good enough. We have monitored the ground all day. JP [McManus] talked about it all day - he walked the ground this morning.
"He said the ground was very good – there wasn't one bit of wet on his boot when I was chatting to him.
"First of all, it is all about the horses' health, and we need to make sure the ground is safe.
"The game is hard enough and horses cost a lot of money, and it has got to be safe ground, and we didn't feel it was safe enough to run him today."

Heart Wood owner Brian Acheson speaking to ITV:
Thursday 12 March 2026 22:00 , Mike Jones”I was on the floor with Teahupoo, when you have a bad week you talk yourself out of it. But it's credit to [trainer] Henry de Bromhead. It's just relief.
"Darragh [O'Keefe] on the horse is the hero. He's done it all now. I'm delighted for him. It's not about us as the owners, it's about the jockeys and the trainers. We should be not seen, not heard!"
Nicky Henderson speaking to ITV about Jonbon:
Thursday 12 March 2026 21:00 , Mike Jones"He's kept this amazing record in tact of never being out of the first two. He never gives up. He finished his race very strongly.
"We've toyed with the idea of three miles and you could argue he'd enjoy it. I thought he jumped brilliantly.
"When he was young, it was hard work but he's mellowed so much as he's got older. It's easy with him now."

James Nesbitt enjoying the Festival
Thursday 12 March 2026 18:00 , Mike JonesActor James Nesbitt has been at Cheltenham Festival today and decried about how much fun he’s having.
He said: "I'm loving it at Cheltenham this week. It's great to be here. I always love it at Cheltenham.
"Ryanair day is always a special day for me after I won it in 2012 with Riverside Theatre (horse he owned). I can't afford to get back into it now.
"Cheltenham always brings people together - it's great. I just love it. No-one would come out in this weather unless there was a reason to, and this is a reason to.
"I've been staying with Mike and Zara (Tindall) for a couple of nights. I overslept and missed a dinner with them a couple of years ago, but I didn't miss the dinner with them this time. I've matured!”

Willie Mullins makes Cheltenham Festival threat after Fact to File withdraws from Ryanair Chase
Thursday 12 March 2026 16:19 , Luke BakerTrainer Willie Mullins has threatened to stop bringing his best horses to Cheltenham Festival over the condition of the racecourse following the late withdrawal of Fact to File in the Ryanair Chase.
Racegoers were rocked on Thursday by the news that odds-on favourite Fact To File would not run in the feature race of St Patrick’s Thursday, which was eventually won by Henry de Bromhead’s Heart Wood ahead of perennial second-place finisher Jonbon.
Mullins, in combination with owner JP McManus, had earlier revealed concern over the ground and maintained the star horse would not race unless rain fell in the area hours before the 4:00pm GMT race.
And after pulling the horse out, Mullins has vented his frustration at the condition and, what he maintains, an unfulfilled promise over watering the course, leading him to threaten to stop bringing the best from his stable in future years.

Fact To File out of Ryanair Chase
Thursday 12 March 2026 15:50 , Will CastleThe big news of the afternoon is that Fact To File has been withdrawn from the Ryanair.
Owner JP McManus earlier suggested the ground was not suitable for the horse, who was the favourite and reigning champion going into today’s featured chase.
McManus said the final decision would be with Willie Mullins and it was confirmed ahead of the Stayers’ Hurdle that Fact To File was in fact out of the race.
It has led to a huge shake-up of the market, with Jonbon rising to favourite.
