Chelsea player ratings vs Borussia Dortmund as Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling inspire Blues win

Kepa Arrizabalaga – Does really well to keep Marco Reus' free-kick out on 17 minutes. Didn't really have too much to do apart from that, but when he was called upon, he kept Chelsea in the tie. 6.

Reece James – Chelsea weren't able to get the ball to him much at all in the first-half. He grew into the game somewhat but didn't have the attacking impact he would've wanted. Defensively, though, James was superb. 6.

Wesley Fofana – He's really dominant in the air and showed that once again, like he did at the weekend. Another brilliant defensive performance when Chelsea needed him most. 6.

Kalidou Koulibaly – Misses two big chances in the first-half, but then it's not really his job to score. He looked really solid defensively and put out any fires that came his way. 6.

Marc Cucurella – A confidence-gaining slide tackle on Giovanni Reyna early on that would've done him the world of good. Overall, didn't really put a foot wrong and looked solid when called upon. 6.

Ben Chilwell Does absolutely brilliant to set up Sterling for Chelsea's first goal. Typical blistering run, met with an inch-perfect delivery. 7.

Enzo Fernandez Not his best game since signing for Chelsea but nothing bad to report, really. Looked neat and tidy. Linked up with Kovacic a few times to break the relentless Dortmund press. 5.

Mateo Kovacic See above. He didn't look at his usual best in the first-half, but provided the legs to try and contain Jude Bellingham, who was quiet at Stamford Bridge. Looked much better and more effective in the second-half which bumps him up to a 6/10. 6.

Joao Felix Perhaps should do better with an early chance after being freed by Sterling. Plays a great flicked ball to Havertz moments later. He's consistently Chelsea's go-to man when they need a bit of magic. 7.

Raheem Sterling – . Nice link-up with Felix early on. He kept getting on the ball between the lines, like he has been ever since returning from injury. Takes his goal really well in the end. There were shouts on social media to take him off in the first-half but he proved himself in a big game once again. 7.

Kai Havertz I do not know how the ball hasn't gone in just before the half-hour mark after he hit the inside of the post. Overall, he actually looked really good with his general play. Takes his penalty really well (at the second attempt) and he definitely deserved it. 8.

Substitutes

Conor Gallagher – Thought he had a goal but Sterling was offside. Put in some nice tackles that got the crowd up. Ran around a lot. 6.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – N/A.

Christian Pulisic – N/A.

Denis Zakaria – N/A.
