Charlie Adam in bizarre Dundee howler as midfielder registers 'assist of the season' for St Mirren

Charlie Adam's inexplicable howler got Dundee off to a nightmare start in their desperate bid to stave off the drop against St Mirren.

Mark McGhee 's side could go down on Saturday if they fail to beat the Buddies and St Johnstone take three points at Livingston.

And their cause wasn't helped by a bizarre error from their captain against his old club just minutes into the crucial clash in Paisley.

Adam was put under pressure in his own box by Greg Kiltie but appeared to buy himself half a yard with a tidy Cruyff turn.

But the 36-year-old then choose to play the ball back across his own goal where Alex Grieve gratefully intercepted to open the scoring.

One Dundee United fan who posted the footage online joked that Adam, who played for Saints on-loan in 2005/06, had just registered "assist of the season" - for St Mirren.

The incident leaves the Dens Park side with a mountain to climb in order to take their fight for survival to the final two games.

Former Liverpool and Rangers star Adam was in the spotlight last week following an angry reaction to McGhee's decision to being subbed.

That then led to a spiky exchange when the Dundee boss was repeatedly asked about Adam's withdrawal in his post-match interview.

You can watch the goal below.
