Channel 4's Derry Girls featured in The Simpsons as writer Lisa McGee left stunned

Channel 4 show Derry Girls' highly anticipated return is coming with season three just around the corner - but the UK isn't the only country where the show has made it big.

American cartoon sitcom The Simpsons, famous for its many different references to real-life and other shows, has featured Derry Girls in its latest episode.

A senior producer for the show confirmed this week that an ice cream store that featured behind main man Homer Simpson, called 'Dairy Girls Ice Cream', was in fact a tribute to the Channel 4 smash hit.

A fan account for The Simpsons tweeted producer Matt Selman, saying: "Is Dairy Girls Ice Cream was supposed to be a reference to Dairy Queen, or Derry Girls, or both?"

In response, Selman said: "Derry Girls".

And writer Lisa McGee was dumbfounded by this news, simply writing: "I. Am. Dead."

In response, Selman wrote: "It's the least we could do!"

In the last couple of weeks, the hype has been building around season three of Derry Girls, as the teaser trailer was finally announced for the Channel 4 show.

Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Erin), Nicola Coughlan (Clare), Jamie-Lee O'Donnell (Michelle), Louisa Harland (Orla), and Dylan Llewellyn (James) are all set to reprise their roles when it comes to our screens later this year.

Producers have sadly confirmed that the third season will be its last in the series, meaning that the Our Lady Immaculate College students will be no more after this batch of episodes!

You can watch the third season of Derry Girls later this year on Channel 4.
