Taoiseach Micheal Martin announced major changes to the state pension system on the way which could offer workers a cash incentive to continue to work until 70.
And Dr. Laura Bambrick, the Head of Social Policy at the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, told Newstalk Breakfast that she welcomed the proposed changes but warned that "the devil will be in the detail". In Ireland, there is currently no single retirement age as such, although 65 is generally regarded as the age most people stop working at.
Despite this, Dr. Bambrick says there are many workers who feel they are forced into retirement as soon as they reach 65, but would like to continue working.
