Celtic and Rangers sent Champions League warning as fans told to snap out of trophy dream

Pat Bonner believes Celtic and Rangers need to change their approach to matches when it comes to Champions League football.

The Glasgow pair are the dominant forces within Scottish football but have found things much tougher in Europe's elite competition. Rangers are bottom of Group A with three defeats and have not scored a goal in three games, while Celtic have one point from their opening trio of matches.

Former Parkhead goalkeeper Bonner says that there has to be a mentality shift and that both clubs need to change up how they head into games, despite some fans perhaps thinking they can go all the way. He told Sportsound: “I’ve said that this is a huge difference. Sometimes we get carried away a little bit in Scotland about the fact that we should be competing at Champions League level against the opposition, and even go on to win it in the mindset of some of the fans and so on.

“That’s a huge ask for any Scottish team, and a disadvantage to Celtic and Rangers is that when they play against opposition in the Champions League.

"It’s a completely different type of game I think you’ve got to play. You don’t normally do that in their own national league, you play completely different, normally playing with high intensity, on the front foot and lots of control of the ball.

“99% of the time, because of the squads they have compared to others, they should win the game. In Europe, that is not the case. Then you have to think about it, you have to understand when to go and press, and that’s another area that Celtic could maybe think about and improve."
