The CDC's epidemic trend model now estimates that COVID-19 infections are growing or likely growing in 35 states, eight states are declining or likely declining, and seven are not changing, according to the agency's state-level reproduction number estimates for data through September 9. In late August, the same model put 48 states in the growing category and none in the declining one.
The reappearance of declining states suggests the late summer wave has begun to turn in parts of the country, though the measure describes direction only and says nothing about how many people are infected.
