The army has launched an investigation after a soldier tragically died at its largest military base.
The British Army has confirmed today that a soldier passed away at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, according to Yorkshire Live.
In a statement, an Army spokesperson said: “We can confirm the death of a soldier on 5th February 2022. The circumstances surrounding this death are being investigated and it would be inappropriate to comment any further at this time.
“Our thoughts are with the soldier’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
The garrison is the largest in Britain and home to over 13,000 Armed Forces personnel.
Several units, including the 1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, the Royal Lancers and 4 Scots (The Highlanders), call Catterick their home.
The tragedy is not the first death at the barracks in recent years.
Last August, Lance Corporal Ryan Mackenzie, 30, was found unresponsive in the bathroom of Munster Barracks, a unit on the site, the Yorkshire Post reports.
At the opening of an inquest in October, his death was said to have been caused by pressure on the neck caused by hanging. A full inquest is yet to be held, according to the publication.
The death of Lance Corporal Bernard Mongan at the base in 2020 is also still to be looked into with a full inquest.
He made bullying allegations before he died.
His body was not found until three weeks after the date of his suspected death - due to a miscommunication that stopped him being reported as AWOL.
At the end of last year, another probe was launched after a 19-year-old female solider was found dead at a different Armed Forces base in Wiltshire in November.
Speaking at the time, the heartbroken family of gunner Jaysley-Louise Beck said their beloved daughter would "light up the room".
