The Arizona Cardinals do not have much salary cap space now right now as OTAs are about to begin next week. According to Over the Cap as of when this was published, the Cardinals had the third-lowest amount in the league at $3 million.
The NFLPA database at the time of publish showed a slightly different total, with $3.02 million in cap space.
However, they will get some relief soon.
When the Cardinals released defensive tackle Jordan Phillips back in March, they designated him a post-June 1 release. They have carried his full cap charge this entire offseason. On June 2, they will get $10 million in cap relief.
The Cardinals have been very quiet in free agency, electing to re-sign players who played for them last season rather than making a splash on outside free agents. With more cap space, it is possible they could finally make a move.
That doesn’t seem likely, though, based on who is left on the market.
What is more likely is they will use the cap space to start working on contract extensions, whether that is quarterback Kyler Murray, whose extension is expected to get done sometime this summer, or safety Jalen Thompson, cornerback Byron Murphy or defensive lineman Zach Allen.
The Cardinals could also save some cap space if they were to extend the contract of left tackle D.J. Humphries.
