Cardinals add TE to practice squad

The Arizona Cardinals announced some moves with the practice squad on Wednesday. They added a tight end, signing John Samuel Shenker to the unit.

The move is needed because veteran tight end Geoff Swaim is injured after hurting his calf in the Cardinals’ 45-29 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He likely will not be able to play this week. That means they need another body to practice at the position as Elijah Higgins now will slide into Swaim’s role and Blake Whiteheart will be the third tight end for the game on Sunday.

Shenker is an undrafted rookie who signed initially with the Las Vegas Raiders and spent time on their practice squad this year. He is 6-foot-3 and 242 pounds and played collegiately for Auburn, where he caught 68 passes for 779 yards and three touchdowns in his college career. He is Auburn’s all-time leader in receptions by a tight end.

In addition to signing Shenker to the practice squad, the Cardinals also re-signed linebacker Davion Taylor and released receiver Daniel Arias.
