Cardiff pub 'expect repercussions' for Welsh rugby stars after meeting bosses probing 'threats and egging'

Cardiff Rugby bosses have met with the management of a Grangetown pub after allegations some of its players engaged in "appalling" behaviour on Saturday night.

Some players went out on a social 24 hours after losing 31-18 to South African side Lions, heading to The Grange pub where it is alleged staff were threatened and eggs were thrown.

Cardiff warned in a statement that appropriate action would be taken should the allegations be confirmed, and are now working to establish the full facts before deciding the next course of action following an hour-long meeting with pub staff on Monday morning.

Bar manager Dai Dearden, who was on duty at the time of the alleged incident, said the premises is working with Cardiff Rugby over its probe.

"We are expecting there to be some repercussions for some members of the squad," he told the BBC after the meeting. "Bar staff have a tough life and we want to ensure that people understand that and that people are respectful, no matter who they are."

An account of the alleged incident was shared online by an apparent staff member from the pub, before being deleted. It has since been shared elsewhere online, saying: "A few of them engaged in some appalling behaviour. Two of the forwards were extremely aggressive and were threatening the barstaff (sic) with violence as they had been asked to leave... This team is meant to represent my city and its (sic) quite shameful to see them behave this way. I cannot imagine what they're like in other cities, nevermind their hometown."

The account had alleged that after leaving the premises individuals went out and bought eggs before returning and throwing them at tables and the floor, but it's understood players were already in possession of eggs as part of the social.

Dan Pearce, who runs the Cardiff Rugby Life fan blog and is season ticket-holder, said the club need to send a clear message.

"The players obviously are not on the clock at the time but they represent the club at all times," he told Radio Wales Breakfast. "At the moment we're not playing particularly well. We need all the support we can get. For the players to be in a pub in a major part of the city and letting us down so publicly like that, it serves to turn people off from coming to the Arms Park and we really need the support. It also cuts down that connection between people who already are supporters and the players themselves.

"I spoke briefly to the chief executive Richard Holland [on Sunday] evening, and in fairness to the club they are taking it with the utmost seriousness. They really do need to make a clear statement here, whether it's a squad player who's perhaps third of fourth choice or if it's a senior Welsh international involved, they need to make a clear stand and show that Cardiff Rugby Club doesn't accept this sort of behaviour and that the jersey and history of the club deserves a lot better than it's getting."

A statement from the club issued on Sunday said: "Cardiff Rugby are aware of an alleged incident that took place in a city centre pub on Saturday evening (October 1). The club have made contact with the pub in question and a meeting will be held tomorrow (Monday, October 3) with Cardiff Rugby representatives and the pub’s management in attendance to ascertain the full facts. Cardiff Rugby does not condone the alleged behaviour and the appropriate action will be taken should the allegations be confirmed. No further comments will be made at this time."
