An elderly man dropping off his grandchild at a Melbourne private school has crashed through a window and plunged into a swimming pool.
Emergency services were called to Haileybury’s Keysborough campus in Melbourne’s south-east at about 8.15am on Friday, after reports a silver RAV4 wagon had reversed into the college’s swimming pool.
Police said the driver, aged 80, was parked outside the school’s aquatic centre on Springvale Road when he reversed into the building and ended up in the swimming pool.
Witnesses helped the man escape from his submerged vehicle.
No one was inside the pool or the building at the time, police said.
Guardian Australia understands the man is a grandparent of a student.
Metropolitan fire brigade Cmdr Julian Bisbal confirmed the driver was a family member of a student and was doing school drop off at the time.
Bisbal said the man was not injured, but was taken to the Cabrini hospital for observation.
“We’re very lucky that no one else was impacted and there were no kids involved,” he told 3AW Radio Melbourne.
“It’s just a timely reminder that cars are a dangerous piece of equipment and we need to treat them with respect.”
The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined and investigations are ongoing.
Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Crime Stoppers.
The pool is also used for swimming lessons run by the Aquastar swim school. Lessons were expected to be cancelled on Friday and possibly into the weekend.
