Car bursts into flames on major Scots road as emergency services called

A car caught fire on a major Scots motorway on Monday, prompting an emergency services response.

Police and fire crews rushed to attend the blaze on the northbound carriageway of the M74 between Junction 14 at Elvanfoot and Junction 15 at Beattock shortly before 10pm on March 13. Dramatic images sent to the Record show the fireball illuminating the hard shoulder of the road.

No disruption to traffic was reported as firefighters tackled the blaze. The occupants of the vehicle were also safely out by the time emergency services arrived and the car has since been removed from the scene.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 9.46pm on Monday March 13 to attend a vehicle fire on the M74 between Beattock and Elvanfoot. No persons were in the vehicle.

"The fire, which involved a private passenger car, was extinguished. We left the scene at 10.36pm."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 10.05pm on Monday, 13 March, police were called to a report of a car on fire on the M74 between 15-14. Officers attended to assist and the vehicle was recovered.”
