Canelo Calls Out Messi for Disrespecting Mexico at World Cup

Mexican professional boxer Canelo Álvarez was not happy with the way Argentina’s Lionel Messi celebrated his team’s 2–0 win over Mexico at the men’s World Cup on Saturday.

While Messi was celebrating with his team, he used his foot to move a Mexico team jersey out of the way. He had exchanged the jersey with a player on the Mexican team, and he apparently was taking off his shoe when he moved the jersey on the floor of the locker room.

A video of the incident can be seen here.

Álvarez tweeted about the incident claiming Messi was “cleaning the floor” with Mexico’s jersey and flag.

He later tweeted a warning to the professional soccer player.

“He better ask God not to run into me,” his tweet read, per The Associated Press’s translation.

However, it sounds like all this simply could be a misunderstanding. Although Messi himself hasn’t addressed Álvarez’s tweets, one of his former teammates, Sergio Aguero, tweeted at the famous boxer to explain what happened.

“Mr. Canelo, don’t go finding excuses or creating trouble, certainly you don’t know soccer or what happens in a locker room,” Aguero tweeted, per AP’s translation. “The shirts are always on the floor after a match as they are sweaty.”

Argentina’s next match will take place on Wednesday as the team faces Poland.
