Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in a New York prison on Wednesday for sexually assaulting Miriam Haley in 2006, yet the frail 74-year-old's fate may rest less on that number than on how California now treats the time he still faces.

Judge Curtis Farber handed down the term at the Manhattan Supreme Court, landing between the punishment prosecutors wanted and the far lighter sentence Weinstein's lawyers pleaded for. The first-degree criminal sexual act carried a maximum of 25 years.
