The traditional recommendation to limit salt intake may have more cardiovascular benefits than we previously realized in the pursuit of a healthier heart. Eliminating even one teaspoon of table salt each day may have the same therapeutic effect on hypertension management as taking prescription antihypertensive drugs, according to recent studies.
Striking a balance for heart healthAccording to the American Heart Association (AHA), limiting daily salt intake is crucial, especially for those with high blood pressure. Their recommendation stands at no more than 2,300 milligrams (mg) a day, with an even lower ideal limit of 1,500 mg per day for most adults. Astonishingly, a reduction of 1,000 mg a day has been linked to improved blood pressure and overall heart health.
