Calgary motorists saw petrol prices surge more than C$0.20 (£0.11) a litre in the week after Alberta scrapped its fuel tax, with the citywide average climbing back above C$1.70 (£0.90) despite the C$0.13-per-litre (£0.07) relief.
GasBuddy figures cited by CBC News put Calgary's average at C$1.50 (£0.80) per litre on 1 October 2026, when the province suspended its fuel tax. By 7 October, the average had risen to C$1.715 (£0.91) per litre, an increase of C$2.15 (£0.11) per litre. The figures show how quickly a tax saving can be overtaken by other movements in pump prices.
