Bundee Aki and Mack Hansen included for Connacht's trip to South Africa

Bundee Aki, Mack Hansen and Finlay Bealham are travelling with Connacht to South Africa for their URC clash with DHL Stormers on Saturday.

The trio, who were part of Ireland's winning tour series in New Zealand in July, had no involvement in last Saturday's disappointing 36-10 defeat at Ulster that opened up the new campaign.

But they will face a Stormers side that claimed the URC title last year and, for their first game in their title defence, have Springboks Joseph Dweba, Warrick Gelant and Salmaan Moerat available having been released from Test duty.

Director of Rugby Andy Friend and new head coach Pete Wilkins will take a 28-strong squad to South Africa today.

Jarrad Butler has also recovered from injury to make the trip, while four players who were selected in the Emerging Ireland squad - Caolin Blade, Sam Illo, Cian Prendergast and Dylan Tierney-Martin - are also included.

The quartet will be available for selection on Saturday before then joining up with the Emerging Ireland squad in Bloemfontein for their three game tour.

To compensate for their loss, Connacht say that more players will fly to South Africa later in the week ahead of the fixture against the Vodacom Bulls on Friday week.

First choice out-half Jack Carty, who is not named in the squad for this week as he closes in on a return from summer surgery, could yet be available for the Bulls clash.

"I think from my time in Super Rugby we were always envious of the teams that were able to do that in South Africa at the start of the season because culturally and off-field it gives you a chance to bound with the group but also it’s a chance to go with fresh bodies," said Wilkins, who was previously with the Queensland Reds.

“You’re coming off the back of pre-season and then just the one game for us. You’re not going at the end of a very long season like we had last year when sometimes it can be tough to emotionally and physically get up for that.

“So for us it’s the perfect time. The Ulster result adds to that in terms of us building together and regrouping, so we’re looking forward to it.”
