Bruno Guimaraes has paid thanks to Newcastle United's Kieran Trippier for his leadership gesture in the Carabao Cup semi-final. The Brazilian saw red in the second leg last month as Southampton tried to find a way back into the tie and trudged off the St James' Park turf as the clock ticked down.
Guimaraes was walked off the field by Trippier as he placed his arm around the midfielder, offering him sympathies as he made his way towards the tunnel. Trippier has since spoken of not wanting Bruno to be alone in that moment - and the former Lyon man is certainly appreciative.
"It was a big gesture from Tripps," Guimaraes told NUFC TV. "It's what the captain needs to do with the players. After I said to him 'thank you for walking with me.'
"It was important because when you get a red card you think you've let the team down and it was in a moment where the team needed me. It was in the final moment of the game and there was pressure from Southampton. I think Tripps did a big gesture."
Guimaraes has had a few weeks of rest and recuperation as he focuses solely on his day at Wembley this weekend. The 25-year-old has missed the last three Premier League games but has watched his side from the stands on every occasion.
Speaking earlier this month, Nick Pope spoke of Guimaraes' and the team's reaction to the Southampton sending off. "From his point of view, I think he was just disappointed to leave the pitch in a big game," he said.
"Bruno is somebody who gives everything. It is something he will learn from. He is still very much loved in the dressing room and in the city. We will get behind him I am sure."
Guimaraes is expected to walk straight back into Eddie Howe's side this weekend as Joe Willock faces a race against time to be fit for the clash.
