Bruno Guimarães nominated for Premier League award after wondergoal vs Southampton

Newcastle United 's Bruno Guimaraes has been nominated for Premier League goal of the month award for March after his brilliant strike against Southampton. Guimaraes scored on what was his Premier League debut alongside Chris Wood to defeat Southampton 2-1 after Stuart Armstrong had put the hosts ahead.

The Brazilian's excellent back-heel strike sparked jubilant celebrations from the travelling Magpies at St Mary's Stadium as Eddie Howe's side picked up a sixth Premier League win in seven games.

Both sides entered the break level but, seven minutes after the restart, a piece of magic from Guimaraes gave the Magpies the lead. January signings Dan Burn and Matt Targett were both involved in the goal, with the centre-back nodding the loanee's corner back into the danger area.

With little time to react, Guimaraes twisted and his backheel volley was lifted over Fraser Forster and into the net. Speaking at the time, boss Howe said: "I have to say I have not seen too much of that, back-heeling the ball in from that range. Goal-scoring is not something he has made a name for himself doing but he is capable of the unexpected and that is what he did.

"The goal was something we probably did not expect from him but shows his technical ability and he is going to be a huge player for us. I thought it was ‘welcome to the Premier League’ for Bruno, an end-to-end game, high in transitions and very physical.

"It will be a really good experience for him. He is a defensive midfielder, but a creative one. The reason we signed him was because we loved his way of playing, his eye for a pass and composure."

Guimaraes will take on Reece James (Burnley v CHELSEA), Cucho Hernandez (WATFORD v Arsenal), Gabriel Martinelli (Watford v ARSENAL), Ruben Neves (WOLVES v Watford), Cristiano Ronaldo (1st goal, MANCHESTER UNITED v Tottenham), Kai Havertz (CHELSEA v Newcastle) and Timothy Castagne (LEICESTER CITY v Brentford) for the award.
