Bruce Willis's Razzies award rescinded following aphasia diagnosis

The founders of the Golden Raspberry Awards, or Razzies, have rescinded the satirical award they created to poke fun at Bruce Willis for his body of work in 2021.

It follows Willis's family announcing he was retiring from acting due to the brain disorder aphasia, which was affecting his cognitive abilities.

The Razzies organisers received a backlash on social media after the actor's family made the announcement.

People called for an apology after the awards group speculated that his condition "explains why he wanted to go out with a bang".

The awards' founders also rescinded a worst actress nomination for Shelley Duvall in the 1980 film The Shining on Thursday because of reported mistreatment by late director Stanley Kubrick.

The Razzies skewer what they consider Hollywood's worst films and performances on the eve of the Oscars ceremony each year.

Award no longer appropriate, founders say

The Razzies organisers created a special category for Willis this year, nominating him eight times for Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in a 2021 Movie for each of his films, but rescinded the award given his recently disclosed diagnosis.

"If someone's medical condition is a factor in their decision making and/or their performance, we acknowledge that it is not appropriate to give them a Razzie," Razzie co-founders Mo Murphy and John Wilson said in a statement.

The Willis family made the announcement on Wednesday, four days after the Razzies.

The Los Angeles Times reported on Wednesday that co-workers on film sets raised concerns about Willis's health in recent years and filmmakers reduced his roles because of his diminished capacity.

Worst actress nomination for 1980 film rescinded

The Razzies founders said they rescinded Duvall's nomination because of "Stanley Kubrick's treatment of her throughout the production".

Kubrick was known for demanding long hours and shooting an extraordinary number of takes.

Duvall told The Hollywood Reporter last year the experience was traumatising.

Asked if Kubrick was unusually cruel or abusive, Duvall said: "He's got that streak in him. He definitely has that."

Will Smith wins Redeemer award

Four-time Razzie winner Will Smith received the Razzie Redeemer award for his Oscar-winning portrayal of Richard Williams, the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, in King Richard.

Smith previously won the Redeemer award in 2015 for his work on Concussion and again in 2019 for playing Genie in Aladdin.

Since the award was introduced in 2014, Hollywood heavyweights including Mel Gibson, Jennifer Aniston, Keanu Reeves and Kristen Stewart have won the gong.
