Britain's 100 best restaurants revealed - see if your local is on the list

A restaurant in Wales has been named the best in the UK at a prestigious annual awards ceremony.

The National Restaurant Awards has never given any establishment outside of England the number one slot of its 100 best of the year since launching in 2007.

Held at London's Hurlingham Club on Monday (June 13), the ceremony was dominated by the capital's restaurant scene with 60 in the top century.

The awards celebrate the brilliance and vibrancy of the industry, and reward the very best chefs, front of house staff and restaurants the country has to offer.

The winner - Ynyshir, in Machylleth, Powys, adds the listing to its two Michelin stars, five AA rosettes and top ranking Wales in the Harden's Guide.

It was described by judges as "combining a thumping soundtrack with a succession of tiny plates of punchy, Japan-influenced cuisine cooked over fire " and praised for providing "a culinary experience like no other".

Chef and owner Gareth Ward, originally from County Durham, has turned Ynyshir into a true destination restaurant for foodies since taking over in 2013.

Stefan Chomka, editor of Restaurant by BigHospitality, described Gareth's achievements as "remarkable".

He said: "Taking on a restaurant located in a traditional country house hotel and putting such a personal and edgy stamp on it was a bold, brave move – a real statement of intent – but one that has really paid off.

"Ynyshir is without doubt one of the most unique and exciting places to eat in the UK at the moment, possibly in the world, and is a very worthy winner of this year’s awards."

Meanwhile, two Michelin-starred Moor Hall in Aughton, near Ormskirk, Lancashire, has been named the Best Restaurant in England.

It was given the coveted top spot in the top 100 list for the previous two years, but was pushed into second this year.
