Bristol City star crowns his remarkable season by scoring first international goal

Andi Weimann's remarkable season was topped off last night with his first international goal against the world champions as Austria drew with France.

The Bristol City forward struck in the 37th minute of the contest, finishing Konrad Laimer's low cross from six-yards out to give his country the lead against a star-studded France side that included Karim Benzema and Antoine Griezmann.

Weimann, coming off the back of scoring 22 goals for the Robins last season, showed great movement to step in front of French centre-back William Saliba before leaving Hugo Lloris with little chance by burying his finish from close range.

Unfortunately, his side couldn't hold out for three points against Didier Deschamp's side with Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe salvaging an equaliser in the 83rd minute. Weimann's game lasted 64 minutes before being replaced by Augsburg forward Michael Gregoritsch.

His first goal has been a long time coming in an Austria shirt having first made his debut in October 2012 against Kazakhstan. It was his 17th cap having returned to the international fold for the first time in seven years earlier this season.

Taking to Instagram after his goal, Weimann wrote: "What a feeling to finally score my first goal for Austria - 10 years after making my debut.

"Shame we couldn’t hold on to the win but another good performance from everyone. One more game to go on Monday." His comments were flooded by his City team-mates congratulating him on his achievement including Tommy Conway, Kasey Palmer, Alex Scott and Ayman Benarous.

Weimann will have the chance of doubling his tally after the weekend when Austria take on Denmark in their Nations League contest. His side sit second in the table with four points from their opening three matches.

The forward was deservedly handed a recall to the national side in March, quite the turnaround with his prior appearance in the national side coming on March 31, 2015 in a friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Meanwhile team-mate Max O'Leary was also called up to the Republic of Ireland squad on Friday for their upcoming two matches against Scotland on Saturday and Ukraine on Tuesday.

A statement released by the Republic of Ireland FA read: "The Bristol City goalkeeper comes into the squad for the Scotland and Ukraine matches. Goalkeeper James Talbot suffered an injury in training today and will return to the club."
