Police have revealed that human remains recently found in Tasmania have been “provisionally identified” as belonging to missing Belgian backpacker Celine Cremer.

Tasmanian Police said today that expert reports highlighted “compelling evidence” that remains, found in the Tasmanian wilderness last month, were those of Cremer.

“Tasmania Police extends its sincere condolences to Ms Cremer’s family and loved ones,” Commander Nathan Johnston said, per 9News

“While this provisional confirmation will not ease their loss, we hope the outcome will provide them with some measure of clarity and closure.”

Police confirmed that no further searches are planned for the Arthur River region.

The renewed search was sparked when a bushwalker alerted authorities to remains in an area about two kilometres from Cremer’s last known location, after which police discovered five more bones, two teeth and a Honda car key.

The recent breakthrough was centred in an area of dense bushland that authorities had only been surveying with helicopters in earlier searches.

A Honda CRV was discovered in a nearby parking lot at the time of Cremer’s disappearance, leading police to believe she got lost on her way back from the bushwalk.

“We want to thank community members for their ongoing support and interest in Celine’s case,” Johnston said.

“I want to acknowledge the extensive efforts of search and rescue personnel, partner agencies and volunteers who dedicated significant time and resources during the many search phases.”

A report around the recently discovered remains is being prepared by the coroner, who will formally identify them at a later date.
