Two adults in central North Carolina have died after contracting West Nile virus, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) said in a social media post on Oct. 9. The News & Observer first reported the deaths. The state did not say where the patients lived or release other details about them.
The deaths come in mid-October, when many residents assume mosquito season has ended. Warm fall evenings still allow mosquitoes to bite, and serious illness falls hardest on older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
