Max Verstappen takes pole while Lewis Hamilton starts 14th after Imola sprint race

Max Verstappen will start in pole position for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix after winning the Saturday Sprint Race.

In a thrilling 21-lap contest, Verstappen overtook Charles Leclerc on the penultimate lap to ensure he will be front of the grid on Sunday, as well as adding eight points to his season total. It was though, another miserable afternoon for Lewis Hamilton who could only finish 14th.

Behind the front two, Verstappen's Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez took third, ahead of Ferrari's Carlos Sainz. The McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo were fifth and sixth respectively, Valtteri Bottas of Alfa Romeo seventh, and Haas driver Kevin Magnusson taking the last of the points positions in eighth.
