Boris Becker banned from Wimbledon despite return to tennis coaching with Holger Rune

Boris Becker will be barred from coaching Holger Rune at next year’s Wimbledon unless the terms of his licence are changed.

The three-time Wimbledon champion was jailed for two-and-a-half years in April last year after being found guilty of hiding £2.5million in assets and loans to avoid paying debts.

In the terms of his early release, Becker is currently banned from the UK. It meant he was barred from Wimbledon this summer and again in 2024.

Becker announced his return to frontline tennis on Thursday, saying he was coaching the highly rated Dane.

Rune had enjoyed a strong clay-court season before reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon – his best result at a major – but has struggled for form since winning just one match on tour since then.

Speaking about his new coaching role, Becker, who had previously coached Novak Djokovic, said: “It makes me a little proud that he [Rune] asked me. The contact has existed for a long time. Not it was a very good fit.

“My calendar allows it and I have always been interested in Holger because he is on the tennis court with so much commitment and temperament.

“Holger is a rough diamond that needs polishing. I like his emotional outbursts. I have coached a player before, Novak Djokovic, who was sometimes not quite himself on the court but that’s allowed.

“He is one of the best young players in the world. My ambition is to find the best Holger Rune."
